All I can say is WOW! This game is what Suikoden 3
could have been. Just like in Suikoden you play
more than 1 party but it is handled MUCH better
than Suikoden 3. The story was the most interesting
so far on PS2 with the exception of maybe Xenosaga or
Shadow Hearts and I'd say they are pretty
well tied.

--- Spoiler Alert: General plot outline ---

A very long time after the story of the first three
Arc the Lad games is when this one takes place. Unlike
before though, you don't load your save games and
nobody from previous games are in this one. However,
the old games are tied into this one a bit.

You start out the game playing as Kharg from Yewbell.
You spend time with him learning to take over as the
head of the defence corps from Paulette's father.
After some run-ins with the Daimos which I will
describe next, you come to the conclusion that you
want to rid the world of daimos and you will do what
it takes to accomplish this.

After some time with Kharg you switch to the other main
character Darc. (Yes this game features two main
characters with two complete teams). Darc is a Daimos.
Daimos are creatures that have evolved from monsters.
They live to fight and become stronger. They have
always been at war with Humans and Darc's new goal is
to become leader of all daimos and lead them to victory
over the humans.

Kharg plans to wipeout the Daimos. Darc plans to
wipeout the humans. And you play both. What is not
to love :) This is a very wattered down plot outline
and it is BY FAR deeper than that. But I don't want
to spoil anything beyond this.

--- Good/Bad Points May contain minor spoilers ---

Good Points:

Both teams and stories interact very nicely with
each other. You will see many times when something
happening in one teams story effects the other. You
switch teams at chapter points. Very well done.

Very deep story. The overall story was very well done.
However, I have gripes about it too. Look for those
below.

Far better than average localization. The localization
was very good on this game. Few mistakes and they even
tied it in well with Working Designs job on 1-3.
Some of you won't like that they replaced the in battle
voices with english unlike WD but it doesn't bother me.

Good gameplay. I hate strategy RPG's but I've liked
all of the Arc series. Mostly because its nowhere
near completely a strategy RPG. In fact, I'd label it
more a turn based RPG that lets you move on the field.

Outstanding Graphics. I list these last because I
could really care less but they were pretty top notch
none the less. They paid close attention to detail.
Including things such as moles on the skin. The
backdrops are all top notch. Really impressive.

Bad points:

The tie-ins with the first three in the series were a
bit shaky. Either for reasons that ideas put forward
during the first series are thrown out the window.
(this is a problem I've had all along with Arc though)
Either that or things said about the first three are
somewhat inaccurate (I do give sony credit, it does
seem like whomever translated this game played WD's
Arc 1-3) This seems to be a problem of the original
and not the localization.

Every once in a while the story doesn't make a lot of
sense. I don't know if this is a problem in the
localization but I don't think it is. It isn't often
but it is a bit distracting when it happens. Maybe
it was just me though.

For those of you that don't like to set and build.
I suspect you will wind up doing it on this game. I
built for several hours on two seperate occasions (on
both teams). Short, if you don't like the battle
system. This will be painful for you.

Finally, the gameplay seems to be a bit slower than
the last go rounds. Did not cause a problem. But it
is noticable.

--- End of Good/bad Points ---

--- Conclusion ---

I found Kharg's story to be more interesting than
Darc's overall but Darc's is nowhere near lacking.
It was all handled quite impressively and I'll
definately be giving it a second play (and
probably a 3rd and 4th or more in time)

Anyway, if you haven't played this game. Do yourself
a favor and get to it. If you have played it. I would
welcome some of your comments on it.
